FIRST READING

Isaiah 58:1-12

Verse 1. “Cry aloud, do not hold back! Raise your voice like a ram’s horn. Declare to My people their transgression and to the house of Jacob their sins. Verse 2. For day after day they seek Me and delight to know My ways, like a nation that does what is right and does not forsake the justice of their God. They ask Me for righteous judgments; they delight in the nearness of God.” Verse 3. “Why have we fasted, and You have not seen? Why have we humbled ourselves, and You have not noticed?” “Behold, on the day of your fast, you do as you please, and you oppress all your workers. Verse 4. You fast with contention and strife to strike viciously with your fist. You cannot fast as you do today and have your voice be heard on high. Verse 5. Is this the fast I have chosen: a day for a man to deny himself, to bow his head like a reed, and to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast and a day acceptable to the LORD? Verse 6. Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to break the chains of wickedness, to untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and tear off every yoke? Verse 7. Isn’t it to share your bread with the hungry, to bring the poor and homeless into your home, to clothe the naked when you see him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Verse 8. Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will come quickly. Your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. Verse 9. Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry out, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’ If you remove the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger and malicious talk, Verse 10. and if you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light will go forth in the darkness, and your night will be like noonday. Verse 11. The LORD will always guide you; He will satisfy you in a sun-scorched land and strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Verse 12. Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins; you will restore the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of the Breach, Restorer of the Streets of Dwelling.

PSALM

Psalm 51

Verse 1. For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. When Nathan the prophet came to him after his adultery with Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your loving devotion; according to Your great compassion, blot out my transgressions.
Verse 2. Wash me clean of my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
Verse 3. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
Verse 4. Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be proved right when You speak and blameless when You judge.
Verse 5. Surely I was brought forth in iniquity; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.
Verse 6. Surely You desire truth in the inmost being; You teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
Verse 7. Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Verse 8. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice.
Verse 9. Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities.
Verse 10. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Verse 11. Cast me not away from Your presence; take not Your Holy Spirit from me.
Verse 12. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and sustain me with a willing spirit.
Verse 13. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will return to You.
Verse 14. Deliver me from bloodguilt, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing of Your righteousness.
Verse 15. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.
Verse 16. For You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; You take no pleasure in burnt offerings.
Verse 17. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
Verse 18. In Your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build up the walls of Jerusalem.
Verse 19. Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, in whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on Your altar.

SECOND READING

Matthew 18:1-7

Verse 1. At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Verse 2. Jesus invited a little child to stand among them. Verse 3. “Truly I tell you,” He said, “unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Verse 4. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Verse 5. And whoever welcomes a little child like this in My name welcomes Me. Verse 6. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Verse 7. Woe to the world for the causes of sin. These stumbling blocks must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!
