FIRST READING

Deuteronomy 24:17-25:4

Verse 17. Do not deny justice to the foreigner or the fatherless, and do not take a widow’s cloak as security. Verse 18. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you from that place. Therefore I am commanding you to do this. Verse 19. If you are harvesting in your field and forget a sheaf there, do not go back to get it. It is to be left for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. Verse 20. When you beat the olives from your trees, you must not go over the branches again. What remains will be for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow. Verse 21. When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you must not go over the vines again. What remains will be for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow. Verse 22. Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt. Therefore I am commanding you to do this. Verse 1. If there is a dispute between men, they are to go to court to be judged, so that the innocent may be acquitted and the guilty condemned. Verse 2. If the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall have him lie down and be flogged in his presence with the number of lashes his crime warrants. Verse 3. He may receive no more than forty lashes, lest your brother be beaten any more than that and be degraded in your sight. Verse 4. Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.

PSALM

Psalm 15

Verse 1. A Psalm of David. O LORD, who may abide in Your tent? Who may dwell on Your holy mountain?
Verse 2. He who walks with integrity and practices righteousness, who speaks the truth from his heart,
Verse 3. who has no slander on his tongue, who does no harm to his neighbor, who casts no scorn on his friend,
Verse 4. who despises the vile but honors those who fear the LORD, who does not revise a costly oath,
Verse 5. who lends his money without interest and refuses a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken.

SECOND READING

1 Timothy 5:17-24

Verse 17. Elders who lead effectively are worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. Verse 18. For the Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his wages.” Verse 19. Do not entertain an accusation against an elder, except on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Verse 20. But those who persist in sin should be rebuked in front of everyone, so that the others will stand in fear of sin. Verse 21. I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels to maintain these principles without bias, and to do nothing out of partiality. Verse 22. Do not be too quick in the laying on of hands and thereby share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure. Verse 23. Stop drinking only water and use a little wine instead, because of your stomach and your frequent ailments. Verse 24. The sins of some men are obvious, going ahead of them to judgment; but the sins of others do not surface until later.
