FIRST READING

Isaiah 53:1-12

Verse 1. Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? Verse 2. He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no stately form or majesty to attract us, no beauty that we should desire Him. Verse 3. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. Verse 4. Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows; yet we considered Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. Verse 5. But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. Verse 6. We all like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid upon Him the iniquity of us all. Verse 7. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so He did not open His mouth. Verse 8. By oppression and judgment He was taken away, and who can recount His descendants? For He was cut off from the land of the living; He was stricken for the transgression of My people. Verse 9. He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in His death, although He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth. Verse 10. Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush Him and to cause Him to suffer; and when His soul is made a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand. Verse 11. After the anguish of His soul, He will see the light of life and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant will justify many, and He will bear their iniquities. Verse 12. Therefore I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He has poured out His life unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors. Yet He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.

PSALM

Psalm 40:6-17

Verse 6. Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but my ears You have opened. Burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not require.
Verse 7. Then I said, “Here I am, I have come — it is written about me in the scroll:
Verse 8. I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart.”
Verse 9. I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; behold, I do not seal my lips, as You, O LORD, do know.
Verse 10. I have not covered up Your righteousness in my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and salvation; I have not concealed Your loving devotion and faithfulness from the great assembly.
Verse 11. O LORD, do not withhold Your mercy from me; Your loving devotion and faithfulness will always guard me.
Verse 12. For evils without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, so that I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart has failed within me.
Verse 13. Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; hurry, O LORD, to help me.
Verse 14. May those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded; may those who wish me harm be repelled and humiliated.
Verse 15. May those who say to me, “Aha, aha!” be appalled at their own shame.
Verse 16. May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; may those who love Your salvation always say, “The LORD be magnified!”
Verse 17. But I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my helper and deliverer; O my God, do not delay.

SECOND READING

Hebrews 10:1-4

Verse 1. For the law is only a shadow of the good things to come, not the realities themselves. It can never, by the same sacrifices offered year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. Verse 2. If it could, would not the offerings have ceased? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt the guilt of their sins. Verse 3. Instead, those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, Verse 4. because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
