FIRST READING
Isaiah 49:1-7
Verse 1. Listen to Me, O islands; pay attention, O distant peoples: The LORD called Me from the womb; from the body of My mother He named Me. Verse 2. He made My mouth like a sharp sword; He hid Me in the shadow of His hand. He made Me like a polished arrow; He hid Me in His quiver. Verse 3. He said to Me, “You are My Servant, Israel, in whom I will display My glory.” Verse 4. But I said, “I have labored in vain, I have spent My strength in futility and vanity; yet My vindication is with the LORD, and My reward is with My God.” Verse 5. And now says the LORD, who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, to bring Jacob back to Him, that Israel might be gathered to Him— for I am honored in the sight of the LORD, and My God is My strength— Verse 6. He says: “It is not enough for You to be My Servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the protected ones of Israel. I will also make You a light for the nations, to bring My salvation to the ends of the earth.” Verse 7. Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel, to Him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the Servant of rulers: “Kings will see You and rise, and princes will bow down, because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen You.”

GOSPEL
John 1:29-42
Verse 29. The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! Verse 30. This is He of whom I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’ Verse 31. I myself did not know Him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that He might be revealed to Israel.” Verse 32. Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove and resting on Him. Verse 33. I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is He who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ Verse 34. I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God. ” Verse 35. The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. Verse 36. When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” Verse 37. And when the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Verse 38. Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you want?” He asked. They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are You staying?” Verse 39. “Come and see,” He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and spent that day with Him. It was about the tenth hour. Verse 40. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John’s testimony and followed Jesus. Verse 41. He first found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated as Christ). Verse 42. Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated as Peter).
